North Idaho Wedding Weekend | Part One

The word that kept coming to mind throughout Kat and José’s wedding weekend was legacy. Everywhere we turned, there were reminders of the generations who had come before them—the family property where they exchanged vows, the wedding date shared by parents and grandparents, heirloom dresses lovingly transformed for a new generation, and traditions that honored both of their families. Their wedding wasn’t just the celebration of two people coming together. It was a beautiful reflection of the family history, faithfulness, and memories that helped shape the lives they are now building together.

We traveled to North Idaho to celebrate Kat and José and were welcomed into a wedding weekend that felt less like a wedding event and more like a gathering of family and friends. The festivities began at the Mica Flats Grange, where family and friends gathered for an evening of square dancing. While we’re usually documenting moments from behind the camera, this time we left our cameras at home and joined in the fun. It was a sweet opportunity to spend time with friends and family, dance alongside our kids, and experience the warmth of the community surrounding Kat and José before their wedding day.

This wedding was especially meaningful for our family. Rob grew up with Kat’s family, and Kat and her sister were like the sisters he never had. Being there wasn’t just about documenting a beautiful wedding day—it was about celebrating people we love as they stepped into this exciting new chapter together.

The next morning brought us to Vahalla Point, a piece of property that has been in Kat’s family for more than 100 years. Nestled along the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, it was the perfect setting for a wedding so deeply rooted in family history.

The date itself held incredible significance. Kat and Jose were married on the same day that Kat’s paternal grandparents, Marianne and George Swick, were married in 1953. The same date was later chosen by Kat’s parents for their own wedding in 1981. Standing on the shores of the lake, it was impossible not to think about the generations of marriages that had come before them and the legacy they were continuing.

If you know Kat, you know she is incredibly creative, talented, and wonderfully spontaneous. As a clothing designer, she took on the ambitious task of creating not one, but two wedding dresses for her wedding weekend. Rather than purchasing a new gown, she lovingly transformed heirloom dresses worn by her grandmothers and one also by her mother, tailoring them to fit her and adding thoughtful touches that reflected her own style. The result was a beautiful blend of family history and personal creativity.

For this lakeside ceremony, Kat’s dress was especially meaningful. She transformed the very dress worn by her paternal grandmother, Marianne, when she married George Swick in 1953—the very anniversary that Kat and José now share. Kat’s parents also share the same anniversary of their 1981 wedding, creating a beautiful connection across three generations.

In true Kat fashion, the dress was still coming together right up until the wedding day. She didn’t sleep a wink the night before because she was busy sewing the final details. On the morning of the wedding, while Kat sat getting her makeup done, her mom was still sewing the skirt. It was one of those moments that perfectly captured who Kat is—creative, passionate, and completely committed to bringing her vision to life.

The family connections didn’t stop there. Kat wore the wedding watch that belonged to her maternal great-grandparents, affectionately known as Ma and Pa, who were married on that very beach in 1933. Because they didn’t exchange wedding rings, the watch became a treasured reminder of their marriage and legacy. The ribbons woven into Kat’s bouquet and hairpiece were saved from her mother’s wedding bouquet, while the lasso and Arras coins used during the ceremony came from José’s parents’ wedding, beautifully honoring both families and their histories.

Under clear skies and surrounded by the people they love most, Kat and José exchanged vows overlooking the very beach where Ma and Pa were married nearly a century earlier. We loved seeing them incorporate traditions from José’s Salvadoran heritage through the lasso and arras ceremony, weaving together family histories and cultures in a way that felt deeply personal and beautiful.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds climbed aboard a cherished red family boat and set off across the lake. The boat once belonged to Ma and Pa, and Kat shared that generations of family members learned to water ski behind it. As if that connection wasn’t special enough, the boat’s brand name—Larson—also happened to be Ma and Pa’s family name. This was José’s first time driving a boat, and he tackled the challenge like the champ that he is!

What followed was an adventure worthy of its own story. Waves from passing boats kept the little vessel rocking, and there were several moments when it felt like they might tip over—but not without plenty of laughter.

Just when they were nearing shore, the engine sputtered and died.

Fortunately, José was ready for the challenge.

With his new bride by his side, he grabbed the oars and rowed them the rest of the way in, providing a picture-perfect display of determination and strength that had everyone smiling from shore.

It was one of those wedding days that couldn’t have been scripted. Everywhere we looked, there were reminders of the people who came before them—the marriages that helped shape their families, the heirlooms lovingly preserved through generations, and the traditions passed down over time. It was an honor not only to capture these memories through our cameras but also to celebrate alongside Kat and Jose as they began the next chapter of a legacy rooted in Christ that has already spanned generations.
